Seniors for Seniors

The Seniors for Seniors Companion Program at Friends of the Manchester Animal Shelter allows Senior citizens over the age of 65 adopt a senior cat or dog over the age of eight. The adoption fees for cats will be $25 and dogs will be $50. The adoption fee includes the animal spayed or neutered and up to date on shots. If you are interested in the program or would like more information contact the shelter.

“Sensible Therapy: Touch”

“The critter with nine lives just might save yours. The risk of dying from a heart attack is 40 percent higher in people who never owned a cat, compared to people who have, say researchers from the University of Minnesota’s Stroke Institute in Minneapolis. Veterinarians chalk up most of the benefit to petting. The Repetitive action reduces cat owners’ heart rates, blood pressure, and stress levels.”

Dogs for the Aged

"Studies have shown that Alzheimer's patients have fewer anxious outbursts if there is an animal in the home," says Lynette Hart, PhD, associate professor at the University of California at Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. "Their caregivers also feel less burdened when there is a pet, particularly if it is a cat, which generally requires less care than a dog," says Hart. Walking a dog or just caring for a pet -- for elderly people who are able -- can provide exercise and companionship. One insurance company, Midland Life Insurance Company of Columbus, Ohio, asks clients over age 75 if they have a pet as part of their medical screening -- which often helps tip the scales in their favor.

Pet Food Pantry

Due to the struggling economy, the Friends of the Manchester Animal Shelter has established a Pet Food Pantry for those pet owners in need. This program enables families to keep their pets while spending their limited resources on living expenses for themselves. FMAS is hoping, that by coming to the aid of these pet owners, they will be able to keep their beloved pets instead of finding them a new home, surrendering to a shelter or abandoning them. FMAS feels this program literally makes a difference between keeping a pet and having to give the pet up.

To be eligible for this program, owners must be low income (no proof will be needed) and the pets must be spayed or neutered. If your pets are not altered, we will arrange low cost spay/neuter for your pet.

Food may be picked at the Manchester Animal Shelter during our normal business hours.

  • Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 10 - 4 pm.
  • Tuesday and Thursday nights from 6 - 8 pm.
  • Saturday 10 - 4 pm.
We highly recommend you call the shelter ahead of time to make sure we have enough food in stock.

We welcome cash donations for this program as well as dog and cat food (wet and dry) and cat litter. Food donations may be dropped off at the shelter or at our collection bins;

Fix-A-Pit

The Friends of the Manchester Animal Shelter is sponsoring a program called “Fix-a-Pit” to encourage responsible pit bull ownership and ultimately lower the euthanasia rate of the breed, which is currently facing an epidemic of homelessness.

Pit Bulls have become the breed of choice and consequently are flooding animal shelters. An estimated 1/3 of dogs that enter shelters are pit bulls or pit bull mixes.

Quick-Fix Clinic!

Friends of Manchester Animal Shelter has a new program called the Quick Fix Clinic, a low cost spay/neuter program for low income residents of Manchester. The clinic will alter & give vaccines to cats that are owned by low income families of Manchester. The clinics will be held every other month at the shelter. This is a very important program for the shelter -- spay/neuter is the only way to reduce the number of stray animals that come in to the shelter. If you are low income and can not afford to have your cat spayed or neutered please contact the shelter for this low cost option so we can help you.
